From the original press release: 2001

Adapted and Directed by: Sheryl Stoodley in collaboration with Jonathan Croy, of Shakespeare and Co, Choreographer Lisa Enzer, and Mildred Ruiz and Steven Sapp of Universes

This collaborative theater piece will be performed Thursday, April 26, Friday April 27, Saturday, April 28 , as well as Thursday, May 3, Friday May 4, and Saturday    May 5 at 8:00 PM.   All performances are at Thornes Marketplace, 3rd Floor Artspace, 150 Main St., Northampton, MA.

In our interpretation, Antigone and Creon are locked in conflict. Creon has forbidden the burial of her brother. Antigone feels she must obey a higher law, defy Creon’s edict, and face death in order to ensure her brother’s spiritual passage. Man’s law versus a higher law---ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances articulate issues echoed down through the centuries, that speak to us today! We have engaged in research around civil disobedience and non violent action in discussion with Frances Crow and Karen Bercovici.

Along side the Serious Play! "total physical expressiveness

actor training" which links the perceptual landscape of the audience with the inner focus of the performer, the actors and director have worked to create their own interpretation of a ten person Greek Chorus which comments on the action and provides an emotional texture to the piece. Ruiz and Sapp from Universes have shared their “Spoken Word/Jazz Poetry”style process with us, complimented by choreography created with Lisa Enzer.

This project is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Northampton Arts Council, and the Lydia B. Stokes Foundation.
