An ensemble theatre is a group of individuals dedicated to collaborative creation with a commitment to working together consistently to develop distinctive productions. The Serious Play team of director, actors, collaborating artists (often including musicians, choreographers, writers, sound & lighting designers, and dramaturgs) are empowered to help contribute to, and shape the ideas affecting the artistic direction of the theatrical work. We begin our process with source-work, a type of theatre research.

“Source-work is a series of activities done to get in touch, both intellectually and emotionally, with the material from which you are working.  It is the time taken (before you begin devising, improvising, writing, choreographing or rehearsing anything on stage) to enter with your entire being into the world, the issues, and the heart of your material.” -Anne Bogart/SITI Company, NYC

Many of Serious Play’s ensemble productions take well over a year to research, develop, rehearse and premiere. For each production, the collaborating artists make an important contribution to the ensemble’s artistic journey.
